The 91µ÷½Ì Center for Book Arts is pleased to launch its inaugural exhibition programming with an exhibition by Sarah Bryant and Katie Baldwin. The artists will also join us for a short residency from Sept. 28 through Oct. 2.

This exhibition of work by Alabama-based artists Katie Baldwin and Sarah Bryant features artist books and a series of monoprints. Centered around the artist book "Small Patches of Land," the exhibition pairs this work with a series of related monoprints. These prints echo, both with their images and their titles, the artist book. In it,the artists use abstractions of Alabama farmland, plants, collard seed, soil maps, and text drawn from interviews to explore the intertwining narratives of two women farmers. It demonstrates the artists’ remarkable handling of multiple modalities: tactile, temporal, visual, and verbal.

This exhibition also includes additional artist books by each artist, and the contribution by each to a collaboration by the group Shift-lab. Those four books have a similarity with Small Patches of Land in their focus: scientific, often agricultural, and societal. These works all share the essential interdependence of materials, text, image, and structure – each so important for artist books.
