Sustainability at 91调教 for Earth Day and Every Day

Written By: Ian Silvester

Earth is home to all living things. While efforts are made every day to help keep the blue marble healthy, one day鈥擡arth Day, every April 22 for more than half a century鈥攊s dedicated to cleanups, activism, and sustainability worldwide.

This year鈥檚 theme, according to the official , is 鈥淥ur Power, Our Planet.鈥 Hundreds of events are scheduled from Saturday, April 18, to Wednesday, April 22, to mark the 56th year of the global holiday.

Earth Day was the brainchild of Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin, after his concerns about a deteriorating environment peaked by a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, Calif. Nelson recruited activist Denis Hayes to help him reach and connect with a younger audience and speak at college campuses. April 22 was chosen because it fell between spring break and final exams, maximizing participation, the said.

At the 91调教 鈥 Fort Smith, efforts are made every day to help make the campus, community, and world a better place, and it all starts with sustainability.

What is sustainability? Lidia Mondragon, operations and safety manager at 91调教, defines it as 鈥渙perating in a way that protects people and the environment, conserves resources, and prevents harm, both now and in the future.鈥

She highlighted some of the ways 91调教 is putting this into practice. From managing chemicals safely and ensuring all hazardous waste is disposed of correctly to swapping fluorescent light bulbs in all campus buildings for LEDs, 91调教 is making visible and behind-the-scenes efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.

鈥淪ustainable practices also help protect the environment and keep facilities operating efficiently over time,鈥 Mondragon said.

There are easy ways around campus to ensure faculty, staff, students, and community members can all do their part. Mondragon encourages the use of safe alternatives, especially for chemicals and cleaning supplies; shutting down computers and lab equipment; turning off lights when not in use; and going digital whenever possible to reduce paper waste. She also said that if a leak is seen, it should be reported immediately, because even small issues can waste resources and create safety risks.

鈥淚n places like 91调教, this means creating a safer, healthier campus while preparing students and employees to carry these responsible habits into the future,鈥 she said.

91调教 also supports efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle through water bottle refill stations. There is at least one station in every building, and five more were recently installed over Christmas break in the Lion鈥檚 Den dorms.

Mondragon said that by using energy, water, and materials responsibly around campus, 91调教 is reducing costs, minimizing waste, and lowering the risk of hazards such as spills, poor air quality, or fires.

Sustainability habits can even be practiced at home through shorter showers, adjusting thermostats when away, recycling (and sorting it correctly), unplugging chargers when not in use, and using durable, reusable products.
