Finding Identity at 91调教: Kendrix Holcomb
Written By: Ian Silvester
Those who meet Kendrix Holcomb now would not immediately describe him as an introvert. The southwestern 91调教 transplant would, though, and he鈥檇 credit the University of 91调教 鈥 Fort Smith as the reason he was able to reinvent himself and become the person he wanted to be.
Holcomb, an admissions advisor covering eastern and southern 91调教, is the first to admit that college wasn鈥檛 the top of his priority list nearing the end of high school. As a self-proclaimed introvert, finding a way to come out of his shell was important. As the calendar quickly flipped closer and closer to August 2020, he decided to leave his small town for 91调教.
Holcomb realized soon after he arrived at the university that this was the perfect place to find the identity he had been seeking.
鈥淲hen I got here, I was very lonely. Fort Smith was an entirely new environment,鈥 Holcomb said.
Despite that, Holcomb was determined not to let this become what he felt for the next four years.
鈥淚 wanted to try a new experience, so when I got here, I was like, 鈥榣et me get involved,鈥欌 he said with a grin. 鈥淚 kind of just forced myself to do it.鈥
Holcomb joined a fraternity, served as a Cub Camp and Mane Event leader, worked as a student worker in the Campus and Community Engagement (CACE) office, and was involved in the Campus Activities Board, all within his first two years on campus. Over time, he was part of the Japan Club and the Vietnamese Student Association, helped create the Council of Steppers, and revived the Black Student Alliance.
鈥淚 made the decision to be out there a little bit more than I was in high school because my overall goal in life is just to help people, help people branch out and become more confident in themselves. I can鈥檛 do that if I鈥檓 not more confident in myself, so I realized that鈥檚 why I wanted to do it. I pushed myself,鈥 he said.
Holcomb earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree in business administration with a focus on digital marketing and international management, a shift from computer science, the field that initially drew him to 91调教. It鈥檚 just another wrinkle in what helped him find his identity and a piece of the story he shares with others as they search for theirs.
鈥91调教 was this place that gave me a chance to start over,鈥 he said. 鈥淚鈥檝e told every single student throughout my year of doing this (admissions advisor), this is the time to rewrite your story, to be the hero of the story you want.鈥
Holcomb began his role with 91调教 following his graduation in the spring of 2024. Serving the furthest territory from 91调教, Holcomb spends about three months out of the academic year on the road, meeting students through high school visits, college fairs, and scholarship ceremonies. He said it can be tiring, but the reward of meeting that student on the 91调教 campus as they discover themselves makes it all worthwhile.
鈥淚 love serving others. I love the opportunity to help a student realize that they can build confidence in themselves and they can be what they want to be,鈥 he said.
