Biography

Dr. Timothy James Workman is the director of choral activities at the University of 91调教 - Fort Smith (91调教), where he conducts the Leonis Chamber Singers, Leo Solis (treble chorus), and Leo Fortis (tenor-bass chorus). Under his direction, these ensembles have presented a wide range of significant repertoire, including "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff, "Rejoice in the Lamb" by Benjamin Britten, "Requiem" by Gabriel Faur茅, and "Gloria" by Francis Poulenc. The 91调教 choirs are active collaborators within the region and perform regularly with the Fort Smith Symphony.

In addition to traditional choral programming, Dr. Workman has developed innovative teaching practices within his ensembles, most notably the Small Ensemble Initiative. This approach emphasizes part independence, vocal confidence, and student leadership and has led to the formation of numerous student-led a cappella groups.

Dr. Workman is an active clinician, lecturer, and educator with a particular interest in conducting, vocal harmony, tuning, and ensemble leadership. He has served for many years on the faculty of Harmony University, an international summer music education program sponsored by the Barbershop Harmony Society. In 2026 he was invited to Germany to join the faculty of the European Harmony Academy in Blaubeuren where he taught conducting, tuning, rehearsal technique, and vocal ensemble pedagogy to singers and directors from across Europe.

As a tenor, baritone, and countertenor soloist, Dr. Workman has performed with orchestras and choirs throughout the United States. Recent appearances include serving as baritone soloist with First United Methodist Church in "The Seven Last Words of Christ" by Th茅odore Dubois. Additional performances include tenor solos in "Messiah" by George Frideric Handel with the St. Augustine Cathedral Choir. As a countertenor, he has appeared in "Magnificat" by Johann Sebastian Bach and "Passio" by Arvo P盲rt.

Outside of the university, Dr. Workman and his wife perform with their four children as the Workman Singers. The family has performed throughout the United States and Canada, including multiple appearances as featured performers at Harmony University and a 2026 tour of Nova Scotia where they performed and worked with singers in Halifax and Cape Breton. Their work together reflects Dr. Workman鈥檚 longstanding interest in teaching children to sing harmony, a subject he has presented on nationally. The ensemble also maintains an active online presence, sharing performances and recordings throughout the year.

Dr. Workman holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting from the University of Texas at Austin, a Master of Music in choral conducting from Brigham Young University, and a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance from Brigham Young University.
